By Paul T. Harkenrider (Sodus, NY) | Stewart Friesen returned to the Fonda Speedway for the first time in 2016 after calling it his home track for so many years racing a Big Block Modified.
After having a second place run at the Albany Saratoga Speedway the night before, the Sprakers, NY driver ironically improved even better taking home with his first Patriot Sprint Tour win of the season over Danny Varin and Cory Sparks.
The field was ignited by hometown favorite, Danny Varin who jumped out to the early lead and was contested early by teenage driver, Paulie Colagiovanni.
Friesen who started fifth, immediately put himself into the top three by lap two and passed Colagiovanni on lap seven.
After Friesen was scored as the second place driver, Pete Richardson and James Hanson got together on the top of turn two which would bring out the first yellow.
Varin would jump back out to the early race lead but on lap 11, Friesen powered to the outside heading into turns one and two and by lap 12, he would be scored as the race leader.
Seven more laps would go as Friesen would have just a slight advantage over second place driver in Varin. Meanwhile, Cory Sparks, who started sixth got himself into the top three as well.
The second caution was thrown as Steve Glover stopped on the top of turn four which brought the field back to single file order on lap 19.
Sparks running third had a good run on top in attempt to take over second from Varin but would not capitalize. Down to the final two laps, Varin was all over Friesen to take back the race lead but would not get it done as Friesen took home the win over Varin, Sparks, Justin Barger, and Dane Lorenc.
Dover Brake supply presented the Evingham Site Excavation Dash for Cash and picking up the win was Daryl Ruggles over Dain Naida and Tommy Wickham.
With the win, Stewart Friesen picked up the Shuttleworth’s ‘Seals the Deal’ bonus worth $50.00. The Stampede Steakhouse ‘Final Finisher’ awards the driver who is the last running car at the conclusion of the 25 lap A-Main, that was awarded to Jamie Kiser, from Whitesboro, NY. The Casey’s Truck Salvage ‘Salvage of the night’ is awarded to a driver who had a rough start to the night but was able to finish strong and the winner of that was brother Mike Kiser who started 15th and finished in 10th.
The series now sets its sites on another two-day weekend as the PST-American Series rolls into Ransomville Speedway on Friday, June 3, and the Fulton Speedway on June 4.
