Jason Barney Dominates Field at Land of Legends Raceway

By Paul Harkenrider (Canandaigua, NY) | Jason Barney continued his 2018 winning ways Saturday night at Land of Legends Raceway by grabbing the race lead on lap 10 from Chuck Hebing and taking home his first Patriot Sprint Tour win of the season, his second overall.

39 cars made the trip to the northern Finger Lakes region to do battle with heat races won by Steve Poirier, Dylan Westbrook, Jeff Cook, and Chuck Hebing. Brockville’s Matt Billings took home his first Evingham Site Excavation Dash for Cash of his career.

2017 PST-Canada champ Dylan Westbrook started on the front row with local favorite, Chuck Hebing igniting the very stout 26 car field.

Hebing would grab the early race lead pulling away from Westbrook and Bryan Howland before Scott Goodrich would find himself tipped over bringing out the events only red flag.

The field would get realigned with Hebing still having command over Howland, Barney, Westbrook and Jonathan Preston at the time.

On the ensuing restart, Barney would begin to move forward clearing the 51 of Howland and start to track down the race leader Hebing. Battle for position inside the top five would also continue between Steve Poirier, Jonathan Preston, and Dylan Westbrook.

Lap traffic suddenly became an issue for the cobra on lap nine which erased any advantage he had on the charging Barney. Then on lap ten, Barney shifted to the outside of Hebing and took the lead heading down the back stretch.

The Brewerton, NY driver continued weave his way through lap traffic only to build his lead on the rest of the field.

Steve Poirier and Dylan Westbrook would also race for that fourth spot with Poirier finally pulling away from Westbrook on lap 18.

Then on lap 21, Hebing would jump an implement tire exiting turn four which allowed Bryan Howland to squeeze on by for that runner up spot.

Howland, nor did anyone else have anything for Barney and he would go on to win by incredible six seconds over Howland, Hebing, Poirier, Westbrook completing the top five.

2017 PST newcomer Jordan Thomas made his first ever start at the Land of Legends Raceway but had to take a provisional after failing to qualify during heat race and B-Main competition. However, Thomas would go on to advance 14 positions and take an 11th place finish back to Harding, PA. This would also earn him the Casey’s Truck Salvage ‘Salvage of the night’ award.

Derek Jonathan would also use a PST Provisional and take home a 24th place finish. He would go on to earn the Prestige Pool & Spa ‘Final Finisher’ award from being the last car to take the checkered flag.

26 cars would end up starting the 25 lap A-Main, Scott Goodrich and Tim Schneider Jr would be the only two drivers to not finish.
