By Paul T. Harkenrider (Brewerton, NY) | Danny Varin used his front row starting spot to full advantage to collect his second career win in a 360 Sprint Car against the competitors from the Patriot Sprint Tour, Empire Super Sprints, and United Racing Club.
Varin started alongside pole sitter, Tim Axton as the two brought the very stout field to the green for 25 laps. Axton would take the lead on lap No.1 before the first yellow came out as Larry Wight, who started sixth was immediately off the pace and his night would end early due to motor issues.
Axton would bring the field back too green for two more laps before Paulie Colagiovanni would also be off the pace to bring out the second yellow of the event. On the restart, Varin would carry a lot of momentum off turn two and take the lead from Axton.
Circuits would continue to tick by as Chuck Hebing and Mark Smith, both starting in the fourth row would begin to make their push to the front and chase down the leader in Varin.
Lap traffic was met by the race leaders on lap 11 when Hebing would try to use the slower cars to get by Varin, however, on lap 12, Hebing was running alongside lapped car Chad Miller, Hebing cut low right in front of Miller causing the two to collide and spin along the bottom of turn one to bring out the third yellow of the A-Main.
Varin would then lead Mark Smith, Shawn Donath, Sammy Reakes, and Jason Barney when then field would restart once again.
Varin would begin to pull away from Smith as he hugged the low side of the track while Smith used the extreme high side. Behind them, a thrilling three wide battle for third would take place between Reakes, Donath, and Barney while Steve Poirier was right there in sixth.
Reakes would eventually clear Donath and Barney beginning to gain ground on second place runner Mark Smith before the final yellow would be drawn from a spinning Jeff Cook in turn one.
The restarts would not slow down Varin as he cruised in the final six laps to win his second career sprint car A- Main after winning at Fulton earlier this year. Sammy Reakes would steal second from Mark Smith, followed by Steve Poirier, and Shawn Donath completing the top five.
Jason Barney would be disqualified from a fifth place run as he drove by the post-race scales and went to his trailer first.
Heat races went to Varin, Tommy Wickham, Paulie Colagiovanni, and Tim Axton. The dash win went to Chad Miller, while the B Main victory went to Ohio driver Jared Hortsman.
The next stop for the A-Verdi Storage Container’s Patriot Sprint Tour will be at the Ohsweken Speedway for the 12th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. $12,000 will be on the line with $1,000 just to take the green.
