Rich Vleck, BROCKVILLE,ONT, (July 18, 2015)- Two of the main-stays of Patriot Sprint Tour races at Brockville over the years have been Michael Parent and Rick Wilson, who duked it out for Patriot Sprint Tour glory down the stretch on Saturday Night, with Parent holding off the local legend.
Parent, of Granby, Quebec, pulled away from Wilson in the closing laps to score his first career Patriot Sprint Tour win. In his first PST start since the event at Brockville last year, the 10-year competitor drove forward and capitalized on the opportunities provided by others to capture the checkered flag.
Parent barely squeaked in to the redraw after finishing in third in his heat race, but after starting in sixth he was on a mission driving forward as Wilson paced the field. On lap nine, Steve Poirier, who was also driving from deeper in the pack, took the lead from “The Joyceville Jet” and appeared he was poised for his fourth PST win at Brockville. On lap 12 though, Poirier slid high coming off of turn two and would have to drop to the back.
Wilson regained the lead but Parent saw his opportunity and went after it, three laps later he was able to take the lead just before a late-race caution would force him to execute a restart. Parent was prolific on the restart and even though Wilson refused to let him run away with the lead, the No. 25 was steady down the stretch to win by just over two seconds.
Parent becomes the 60th driver in series history to win a points-paying event. It is also the second PST race in a row where a driver scored their first-career series win, after Steve Collins won at Freedom last weekend.
It would not have been the first PST win for Wilson, but it would have been his first since a Brockville victory in 2006. The veteran was stout throughout the night, winning his heat and leading 11 laps at his hometown track.
Bryan Howland held off a trio of Americans for the final spot on the podium. Howland won his heat, but struggled to move forward throughout the feature. Defending PST Canada Champion Jared Zimbardi rebounded from a poor redraw to get up to fourth, just ahead of Jason Barney, who finished in fifth. Zimbardi and Barney are now tied atop the PST Canada standings.
Despite having to drop to the back, Steve Poirier was able to drive back up to sixth over the second half of the race, moving ahead of Devin Caron, who scored a fine seventh place finish in his first race of the year. Lee Ladouceur, Mitch Brown and Chris Jones rounded out the top 10.
A competitive group of 20 cars helped to fill the pits in the first of two PST events at Brockville in 2015. All but one of the cars were able to finish the 25-lap feature event.
