Jason Barney Blasts to Patriot Sprint Tour Canada Win at Ohsweken

Rich Vleck, (June 21, 2013)- Over his seven years of sprint car action, Jason Barney has had some of the best performances of his distinguished sprint car career at Ohsweken, scoring two impressive runner-up finishes in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken, along with a preliminary feature win in the 2008 Nationals, but never has he taken top billing on a night at “The Big O”.

After the heat races on Friday, when he finished fourth, it did not appear that this night would be any different but Barney, drove from his 17th place starting position to claim his fourth career Patriot Sprint Tour win, his first since 2009, to fly the series banner in what was a highly-anticipated challenge with the weekly Corr/Pak Sprints of Ohsweken.

While most of the drivers set up to run the middle line to the high side around the 3/8-mile oval, Barney acted differently, tightening up his No. 87 and propelling off the corners.  By lap 17 he had the lead from Jamie Collard and then worked hard to fight off speedway owner Glenn Styres to take the double checkered flags.

The surface began to change in the late stages of the event, with Bryan Howland moving up along with Styres to finish in third. Jared Zimbardi was also able to move by Jamie Collard, as they rounded out the top five.

It was a very deep field on Friday Night, which was evident with the fact that Justin Barger, Jessica Zemken and Steve Poirier finished sixth through eighth, respectively.  Tommy Wickham and Jim Huppunen completed the top 10.

A total of 30 cars were in competition on Friday Night, with Scott Kreutter and Jamie Turner utilizing provisionals to create what was supposed to be a 24 car field until Keith Dempster was unable to start the 25-lap event.
